Medical Microbiology, Risk Analysis

Hiring CSC will give you confidence to separate scientific FACTS from BELIEFS and MYTHS about risk

  • Provides integrated scientific support, including expertise and knowledge of risks AND benefits, from microbial ecology in foods to complex ecological relationships of the ‘human superorganism’ (human and microbial partners, termed the microbiome)

  • Advises clients on diverse diseases including anthrax, listeriosis, rabbit fever, salmonellosis, Ebola, influenza, and SARS that can generate irrational fears often heightened by media accounts exaggerating risks to human and environmental health

  • Specializes in assessment of risks AND benefits caused by microbes in foods from farm to table (production, processing and food service facilities) and in the environment (air, buildings, soil, water

Areas of Expertise

Expert testimony on microbial risk

The media often exudes germophobia, fear that the presence of a microbe in our food or environment will kill us healthy superorganisms. Learn about 21st century scientific evidence for mechanisms of disease and innate defenses on Expertise and Publications pages. For example, CSC assisted in developing a process for selecting SAFE DOSES  for inhaling and ingesting biothreat agents, including feared microbes causing anthrax and rabbit fever.

peer review

Demystifying risk and attendant uncertainty is especially important for the peer review process. CSC provides reviews for journal editors and others who need scientists with a critical eye for identifying alternative assumptions that influence risk assessments and analyses. Conservative assumptions about dose-response relationships, for example, commonly overestimate risks for foodborne illness and underestimate uncertainties.

Microbial Benefit-risk assessment

Do you need to understand and minimize risk to public health from exposures to bacteria and viruses? Do you need to understand and maximize benefits of the microbiota to health? SRA Fellow Peg Coleman and collaborators provide trans-disciplinary expertise to assist decision makers and stakeholders with developing the knowledge base for assessing, communicating, and managing risks to human health and the environment.

Predictive microbiology, Microbial ecology

Growth of microbes in food, the environment, and human cells and tissues is essential for health and disease. CSC can provide the expertise to identify the conditions limiting growth of pathogens and stimulating growth of beneficial microbes. Strengthen your microbial risk assessments by including 21st century science on the microbiota and mechanisms by which it protects human superorganisms against pathogens.

education and training

The microbiome revolution has turned the scientific world upside down in the first decades after the Human Genome Project and the Human Microbiome Project began! CSC provides lectures and training on microbiota in foods and the environment, and how 21st century science is driving evolution of more sophisticated methodologies for assessing risks and benefits incorporating data on the microbiota.

The two fatefully mistaken fundamental concepts [of the approach to human biology in the twentieth century] were: 1) humans are better off as pure organisms free of microbes; and 2) the human (mammalian) genome is the most important biological factor in creating a better future for humans.
— Rodney Dietert, 2016. The Human Superorganism, page 1 in The New Medical Landscape.
